What?

H5P is a free way to add an interactive video to a TRACS Lesson.

  1. You will begin by recording a mini lecture in the YouStar Studio or with your own computer. It could be a screencast using Quicktime. It could be recorded from the Record feature Powerpoint 2016 or newer. It could also be recorded with the Ensemble Recording feature in Mediaflo. Any method that results in an mp4 video is fine.
  2. You will then upload the video to YouTube. You will need to create a YouTube account if you have not done so already. If you are concerned with keeping your video private, select the “unlisted” privacy option. Only someone with the link to your video will be able to find your video; it won’t appear in searches.

Why?

Interactive video inserts a multiple-choice question to engage the student’s mind about the content they are hearing. It helps to ensure they are listening and paying attention, but it also gets them actively thinking about the material as they see and hear it. It is free and easy to do.

How?

  1. Once you have added your video in YouTube, copy the link from the share button.
  2. Log in to your account at H5P.org. You will need to create an account if you have not already done so.
  3. Choose My Account from the top right.
  4. Then choose “Create New Content.”
  5. Choose Interactive Video.
  6. Click the box with the plus mark in the middle.
  7. Paste the link you copied from YouTube and click Insert.
  8. Click Next Step Add Interactions.
  9. Choose the time in the video where you want to add an interaction.
  10. Click the multiple-choice icon from the top middle above the video. (Hovering with your mouse cursor before clicking will reveal what each icon does.) You can also use single choice set if you want to add a series of multiple-choice questions instead of just one.

***Although you may freely experiment with other question types. The two interaction types mentioned in step 11 are the easiest and most intuitive to build well***

  1. Choose Save near the bottom of the screen. It is pink text surrounded by a box.
  2. Click Embed below the interactive video and copy the entire embed code from the box.
  3. Navigate to the TRACS Lesson you would like to add an interactive video to.
  4. Choose Add Content, Embed Content on page and Paste the entire Embed Code in the box that says Or add a URL or embed code. Click Save.
  5. Now your interactive video appears within your TRACS Lesson at the bottom. Reorder if desired by clicking the Reorder button in the tabs at the top.

Conclusion

Adding an interaction to your video using H5P doesn’t just add a little pizzazz to your lesson. It engages the student in a low-stakes, ungraded manner to check their understanding of the content you are trying to deliver.
